Dragon Ball Z: Budokai 2, released for the PlayStation 2 in 2003, is a fighting video game developed by Dimps and published by Bandai and Atari SA. It is a sequel to Dragon Ball Z: Budokai and is based on the popular anime and manga series Dragon Ball Z. The game features cell-shaded animation, which enhances the visual style of the characters and environments, making them look more like their animated counterparts.
One of the key features of Dragon Ball Z: Budokai 2 is the World Tournament mode, which allows players to compete against up to eight players in a martial arts tournament. This mode offers a variety of ways to play, including single-player and multiplayer options. In multiplayer, if only one human player is present, they can win prize money, adding an element of competition and reward. Additionally, the Dueling mode lets players fight the computer at a preset skill level or engage in battles with another human player, using custom skills to create unique and challenging fights.
The game introduces an all-new single-player mode called “Dragon World,” which expands upon the Dragon Ball Z saga by presenting new match-ups, character cameos, and missions that were not seen in previous installments. Players can choose from a roster of characters, including Goku, Krillin, Vegeta, and others, each with their own unique abilities and transformations. The game also includes new characters such as Android 17 and Android 19, adding more depth to the roster.
In terms of gameplay, Dragon Ball Z: Budokai 2 retains the 2.5D plane battle system from its predecessor, where characters can move around the battlefield and use “Ki” energy attacks to deplete their opponent’s health bar. The game also includes destructible environments, allowing players to interact with their surroundings during battles. Players can perform Super Attacks by using up a certain number of Ki bars from the Ki gauge, adding an extra layer of strategy to the fighting mechanics.
