Midnight Club Los Angeles is a 2008 racing video game developed by Rockstar San Diego and published by Rockstar Games. It is the fourth and final instalment in the Midnight Club series before it was discontinued in January 2010. The game features 43 (58 with DLC) cars and 3 (plus one additional with DLC) motorcycles. The open world map of Los Angeles is the size of all three cities from the previous instalments combined. After several delays, Midnight Club: Los Angeles was released in October 2008. The game allows players to race at breakneck speeds through the streets of modern-day L.A., recreated in stunning detail. Players can drive the hottest range of real-world tuners, muscle cars, exotics, and superbikes on the streets today. The game offers extensive customization of vehicles for both performance and appearance, allowing players to fully personalize their officially licensed imports, tuners, classic muscle cars, and motorcycles both inside and out with a dizzying array of licensed rims, spoilers, interior gauges, tires, and more.
The game features a 24-hour day-to-night cycle, weather effects, and traffic with licensed vehicles, adding a realistic aspect to the game. New additions include a dynamic weather system that alters the gameplay experience, making the vehicle more prone to sliding on slick surfaces. Players can choose the "Quick Fix" option to repair their vehicle after races, but to get back the "nice, new car look," they must drive back to a garage or gas station. The game also includes special abilities such as EMP, Agro, Roar, and Zone, which can be used by any vehicle, as chosen by the player. These abilities can be changed at garages whenever necessary. The game also features police that take notice of simple infractions in the game world, such as running red lights, speeding, burning out, hitting their cars or nearby cars, and driving off-road. If caught, players have the choice of pulling over or leading the police into a pursuit, which can result in a fine or arrest if the player's vehicle takes too much damage.
Midnight Club: Los Angeles also includes online play that supports sixteen players at once, with new modes such as Keep Away and Stockpile. New online power-ups include Mirror, Agro, and Random, and a new aspect called "Rate My Ride" allows players to view, rate, sell, and buy user-modified vehicles. The game also includes a Race Editor feature that allows players to make tracks for online play, providing a seamless open-world experience with minimal menus and load times. The game is part of Rockstar's Social Club, which includes features that track the stats of the player's driving and award them with various in-game content such as hydraulics, TIS rims, and the Audi R8.
