The 187-card set (35 commons, 31 uncommons, 36 rares) features a strong flavor-based theme, with the story conveyed through interconnected card flavor texts depicting the collapse of civilizations amid dwindling resources and factional warfare. It introduced universal creature types for the first time, establishing tribal themes centered around groups like Elves, Dwarves, Homarids, Thrulls, and Merfolk, while also pioneering mechanics involving counters and tokens—though their overuse led to gameplay complexity.
