Doom for the Sega Genesis 32X was released as a launch title for the add-on peripheral in November 1994. Developed directly by John Carmack, the game was designed to take advantage of the 32X’s capabilities while still adhering to the limitations of the Sega Genesis hardware. The game features seventeen maps from the first two episodes of the original Doom, but it lacks many of the features and content found in the PC version. For instance, it does not play in full screen, is missing several maps and monsters, and has no multiplayer mode. Additionally, the game does not support saving, and the soundtrack, which is based on the YM2612 FM synthesis chip, is often described as inferior to other versions, sometimes compared to flatulence due to its low-quality, noisy sound.
The Sega 32X version of Doom was rushed to meet the launch date of the 32X, which led to several compromises in the game’s content and performance. The game’s graphics are limited to front-facing rotations for sprites, and the sound effects are also reduced. Despite these limitations, the game was still praised for its innovative use of the 32X hardware and for being the first Doom port on a home console.
In recent years, the community has shown interest in enhancing the original Doom 32X experience. One notable example is the “Doom 32X Resurrection” mod, which adds several improvements to the original game. These enhancements include support for a 6-button controller, the reintroduction of the Cyberdemon and Spider Mastermind, mipmapping, and the option to play a soundtrack from the Sega CD. The mod also introduces saving functionality and other technical changes, significantly improving the gameplay experience. However, playing the mod typically requires a flash cart or a modded cartridge, as the original game cannot be easily updated.
The Doom 32X Resurrection mod has also enabled multiplayer functionality through the use of system link cables, allowing players to connect two Genesis/32X systems for cooperative play. This feature was not available in the original release, as the 32X itself did not support system linking. The mod requires two copies of the game and two TVs, with each system needing a Genesis/32X combo. The system link cable is plugged into the second controller port on each system, transmitting player data between the two systems.
Overall, while the original Doom 32X release was limited by the hardware of its time, the community-driven improvements have breathed new life into the game, making it a more enjoyable and complete experience for modern players
