Ape Escape 3 is a platform game developed and published by Sony Computer Entertainment for the PlayStation 2, released in 2005. The game is the third installment in the Ape Escape series and continues the story of the mischievous Pipo Monkeys and their leader, Specter. In this game, Specter finds a Monkey Helmet and enlists the help of a human scientist, Dr. Tomoki, to carry out his nefarious plans. They establish television stations protected by the Freaky Monkey Five, broadcasting shows that put humans into a mindless trance, except for the twins Kei and Yumi, their aunt Aki, and Natalie. When Natalie informs Kei and Yumi that Spike, Jimmy, and the Professor have been affected by the broadcasts, the twins embark on a mission to capture the monkeys and stop Specter and Tomoki.
The gameplay of Ape Escape 3 revolves around Kei and Yumi, who can be chosen at the start of the game. Players navigate through various television stages, each filled with different challenges and hiding places for the monkeys. The game features a variety of weapons and gadgets that players can use to capture the apes, including nets, propellers, and radar sensors. One of the unique features of Ape Escape 3 is the ability to transform into different characters, each with unique abilities that help in capturing the monkeys. These transformations include a ninja, a cowboy, and a knight, among others. The enhanced AI of the monkeys makes them more challenging to catch, as they can dodge attacks, take weapons from players, and even counterattack.
The game’s storyline is set in a television station where the monkeys have taken control, broadcasting shows that influence human behavior. Players must explore different areas of the station, such as studios, offices, and even toy stores, to find and capture the monkeys. Each level contains a specific number of monkeys that must be caught to progress, and once cleared, players can return to collect additional monkeys and unlock hidden areas. The game also includes mini-games and missions that add to the overall experience, such as a Metal Gear Solid parody and a Super Monkey Throw Stadium where players compete in throwing monkeys for distance.
