Dragon Ball Z: Budokai 3 is a fighting video game developed by Dimps and published by Atari for the PlayStation 2. It was released on November 16, 2004, in North America, and on December 3, 2004, in Europe. The game is based on the popular anime series Dragon Ball Z and offers an enhanced gaming experience compared to its predecessors.
The game features a revamped Ki system, where each character has a base Ki level that fluctuates up or down. If a character’s Ki is higher than their base level, their attack power is slightly boosted, and if it drops below the base level, their defense is lowered. Transformations now increase the base Ki level rather than draining it, and they can be maintained for longer periods. Additionally, the game introduces new transformation types and fusion methods, such as the Potara fusion, which lasts the entire match if successful. The game also includes a free flight feature, allowing players to ascend or descend during matches by double-tapping the d-pad.
Dragon Ball Z: Budokai 3 features an extensive character roster, including Goku, who has access to various transformations like Super Saiyan 4 and Fusion: Super Gogeta. Other characters like Gotenks and Vegeta are also available, each with their unique transformations and playable forms. The game’s capsule system allows players to customize their characters with capsules that provide various status effects and can be used during battles for additional advantages.
The story mode in Dragon Ball Z: Budokai 3 is set in a world called Dragon Universe, where players can choose from eleven unlockable characters and travel around two maps, Planet Earth and Planet Namek. Players collect items, battle opponents, and progress through key events from the Saiyan Saga to the Kid Buu Saga. The story mode requires multiple play-throughs to unlock all content, making it a significant part of the game’s replay value.
