Final Fantasy X is a landmark role-playing game that debuted in July 2001 for the PlayStation 2, marking the first title in the series released on a sixth-generation console and the first to feature fully three-dimensional, polygonal environments instead of pre-rendered backdrops. Developed and published by Squaresoft, the game is set in the richly detailed world of Spira, a fictional landmass inspired by Southeast Asia, Thailand, and Japan, featuring diverse climates from tropical islands to frigid mountain regions. The story follows Tidus, a star blitzball player from the mythical city of Zanarkand, who is mysteriously transported to Spira after his home is destroyed by the monstrous entity Sin. There, he becomes a guardian to Yuna, a summoner tasked with defeating Sin, and together they embark on a journey that uncovers the truth behind Sin's existence and the cycle of destruction that has plagued Spira for a millennium.
The gameplay of Final Fantasy X introduces several innovative systems, most notably the Conditional Turn-Based Battle (CTB) system, which replaces the series' traditional Active Time Battle (ATB) system, allowing players to make strategic decisions without time pressure. A key feature is the Sphere Grid, a customizable system that replaces the standard experience point progression, enabling players to tailor their characters' abilities and statistics by navigating a grid of interconnected nodes. The game also features a unique summoning system where powerful Aeons, spirits of immense power, replace the player's party in battle and fight until defeated, dismissed, or the battle is won. Players can also engage in the underwater sport of blitzball, a mandatory minigame early in the story that plays a crucial role in character development and plot progression. The game was the first in the series to include full voice acting, utilizing a Facial Motion System to enhance the emotional depth of its cinematic sequences.
