Get On Da Mic is the industry's first hip-hop music game, immersing players in the vibrant world of rap culture with 40 licensed tracks from iconic artists like Dr. Dre, Tupac Shakur, Snoop Dogg, Missy Elliott, Lil' Kim, and Public Enemy. Players step into the shoes of one of eight customizable characters, aiming to rise through the ranks by delivering powerful performances. The game features a unique story mode that follows a rapper's journey from the streets to the spotlight, complete with levels that reflect different stages of a hip-hop career, from battling in a bathroom to performing on a massive stage. As players succeed, they earn virtual money to purchase new clothes, upgrade their homes, and acquire "bling," reflecting the lifestyle of a rap superstar.
The gameplay centers on rapping along to the beat, with words appearing on two scrolling bars that players must hit in time. While the game offers multiple difficulty levels to accommodate players of all skill levels, the rhythm mechanics have been criticized for being inconsistent, with some players reporting that words appear too quickly or that the timing is unfair. Despite these issues, the game includes various modes to keep players engaged, such as multiplayer freestyle battles, a "Party Mode" for casual karaoke sessions, and a practice mode for honing skills. The game is compatible with the EyeToy camera, allowing players to see their performance on screen, and features interactive crowds that react to the quality of the performance, cheering for good rhymes and walking away when the flow falters.
Originally released in October 2004 by Eidos Interactive for the PlayStation 2, Get On Da Mic was marketed as a fresh take on the karaoke genre, focusing exclusively on hip-hop music and offering a unique blend of rhythm gameplay and character progression. The game's presentation is heavily themed around urban culture, with dynamic environments and a strong emphasis on style and self-expression.
