Guitar Hero Live for Xbox One brings the iconic music rhythm game to life like never before. Players can experience the energy of a live concert and step into the shoes of a rock star. The game features an innovative new guitar controller with a 2-row button layout that mimics a true guitar experience, providing a more realistic feel. With over 40 tracks from legendary rock bands to modern hits, the game offers a diverse range of songs across genres. The redesigned guitar controller adds a new dimension to gameplay, making every performance feel authentic.

The game introduces a completely new way to play, featuring a first-person perspective of the concert stage. As players play along to a diverse selection of tracks spanning various genres, they'll experience the excitement of being a part of a live performance. The innovative guitar controller allows for a more challenging and immersive gameplay experience, with notes that can be held and sustained, indicated by trailing lines after the note markers. Players can also use the guitar's whammy bar to alter the held note's pitch for effect, adding a layer of depth to the gameplay.

Guitar Hero Live also includes online features, allowing players to challenge other players and compete in the world's biggest music festival. The game's career mode is broken up into a dozen-some show sets, each set consisting of about 3-5 songs. The video for each set includes the band's introduction, banter between the band and crowd between songs, and final ovations on conclusion of the show. Players can unlock each set in order to move forward and are shown the game's ranking of their performance and for each song, based on factors such as percentage of notes hit correctly, the longest streak of properly played consecutive notes, and how long they kept the virtual crowd excited about their performance.

The game also includes a GHTV mode, where songs are presented with the note track overlaid atop their music video or from live concert footage. This mode allows players to pick up and play currently-streamed songs at any time or use money and in-game credits to play any song within the library. However, the GHTV mode received mixed reception for its reliance on microtransactions, and the inability to permanently purchase songs to own  Despite this, the game's live concert experience and innovative gameplay mechanics have been praised by many players
