Michael Jackson’s Moonwalker for the Sega Genesis is a side-scrolling platform game developed and published by Sega in 1990. The game is loosely based on the film of the same name, where Michael Jackson, dressed in his iconic white suit and fedora, sets out to rescue kidnapped children from the evil Mr. Big. The game’s plot diverges from the movie’s storyline, leading players through various environments such as clubs, streets, woods, caverns, and even outer space.

In the Sega Genesis version, the gameplay is significantly different from the arcade version. It features a side-scrolling platformer format, where players navigate through levels filled with enemies and obstacles. The game’s protagonist, Michael Jackson, has a unique set of moves that include his signature dance moves and special attacks. Players can perform a high kick attack, which can be extended into a moonwalk if the attack button is held and the character moves backward. Additionally, Jackson has a special attack known as “Dance Magic,” where he can perform dance routines from his songs “Smooth Criminal,” “Beat It,” and “Billie Jean.” These dance routines can be used to defeat enemies and progress through the game.

The game’s graphics and sound are impressive for a 1990 release, showcasing the technical capabilities of the Sega Genesis. The levels are well-designed, with some stages featuring memorable set pieces like a graveyard and a laboratory. The game’s music is a synthesized version of Michael Jackson’s songs, which adds to the nostalgic appeal for fans of the artist. However, the game’s length is relatively short, taking the average player under two hours to complete.

Despite its shortcomings in terms of gameplay depth and length, Michael Jackson’s Moonwalker holds a special place in the hearts of many fans. It was one of the first games to showcase the technical superiority of the Sega Genesis over other consoles of the time. The game’s accessibility and fun set pieces make it an enjoyable experience, even if it lacks the excitement and structure of a truly great action game.
