NHL Breakaway '99 is an ice hockey game for the Nintendo 64, serving as a sequel to NHL Breakaway 98. It was released in 1998 and features all 27 NHL teams, including the expansion Nashville Predators, along with over 600 players. The game includes updated 1998-99 team jerseys, rosters, schedules, and realigned divisions, providing an immersive NHL experience. Players can choose from five game modes: exhibition, practice, season, shootout, and playoffs.
The game retains the same features and play modes as its predecessor, with new additions such as updated rosters, schedules, jerseys, and the inclusion of the Nashville Predators. Players can create, trade, sign, and release players, as well as set team styles for physical play, power plays, and penalty killing. The game also allows for adjustable settings, including difficulty level, game speed, injuries, fatigue, fighting, and penalties On the ice, players can call multiple offensive and defensive sets for key situations such as power plays and penalty killing.
NHL Breakaway '99 also includes a create-a-player mode, allowing players to design their own star athletes, whose names will be displayed on jerseys. The developers incorporated each featured athlete's height and weight measurements in the motion-captured 3D player models, enhancing the realism of the game. High-resolution graphics and advanced lighting effects help bring the arenas to life, with players able to choose from eight possible camera views. The game also features in-game scouting reports and strategy recommendations from Steve Yzerman, the cover star.
