The Sega Genesis Model 2 CD Drive, also known as the Sega CD Model 2, was introduced in early 1993 alongside the Model 2 Genesis/Mega Drive. This redesign marked a significant departure from the original model, as it abandoned the front-loading tray in favor of a more cost-effective top-loading design. This particular version of the Sega CD is the most common outside Japan and was the only one to be released in Brazil.
The Model 2 Sega CD features a thin base housing the motherboard, with the drive mechanism situated to the side of the attached console. This design was intended to complement the aesthetics of the Model 2 Genesis/Mega Drive, although it is worth noting that a Model 1 Genesis/Mega Drive can still be used with the Model 2 Sega CD, albeit with the console partially hanging off the side. The Sega CD Model 2 was designed to enhance the capabilities of the Sega Genesis by adding CD-ROM functionality, which allowed for CD-based games and multimedia content. It also included hardware enhancements such as a faster central processing unit and graphical features like sprite scaling and rotation.
Connecting the Sega CD Model 2 to the Genesis Model 2 involves aligning the exposed expansion port on the Genesis with the connector terminal on the Sega CD. The process requires setting the Genesis on top of the Sega CD and sliding it to the right until the steel joining plate on the bottom of the Genesis locks into the tabs on the Sega CD. This setup enables the Sega CD to function as an accessory to the Genesis, expanding its gaming library and multimedia capabilities.
All consoles are tested prior to sale and come with a 72 hour warranty.
