Splatoon is a third-person shooter game developed and published by Nintendo for the Wii U. The game centers around Inklings, cephalopodic lifeforms that can transform between humanoid and cephalopod forms and frequently engage in turf wars with each other. Players use a variety of weapons that produce and shoot ink while in their humanoid forms or swim and hide in surfaces covered in their own ink while in their cephalopod forms. The game features several different game modes, including four-on-four online multiplayer and a single player campaign.

In Splatoon, players can choose from a range of water guns and oversized painting equipment that they use to spread their ink across the floors and walls of the gameplay area and to damage enemies. Players can freely alternate between a humanoid "inkling" form and a "squid" form with the press of a button. While in human form, they can use their weapons to spread ink across surfaces and damage enemy players. While in squid form, players can swim through their own team's ink and pass under and around metal fences and meshes, as well as move vertically up ink spread over walls.

The game also supports Splatoon Amiibo figures, with each figure unlocking a set of missions which unlocks extra equipment (weapons and clothing) and a bonus minigame upon completion, the latter of which can be selected and played on the Wii U GamePad while waiting in lobbies.
