Street Fighter Alpha 3 MAX for the Sony PSP is a direct conversion of the critically acclaimed arcade fighting game, Street Fighter Alpha 3, enhanced with additional original content specifically designed for the portable system including Wi-Fi functionality and extra gameplay modes. The game features a roster of more than 30 renowned characters from the Street Fighter universe, with four additional fighters joining the competition: Yun, Maki, Eagle, and Ingrid. This version is a near-faithful conversion of the arcade version with reduced loading times and all frames and sprites intact, making it one of the most complete versions of the game.

The game includes all the novelties introduced in the Alpha series, such as finite defenses, the ability to recover, and the option to customize special attacks. It also introduces new gameplay modes, including the Variable Battle Mode, which allows real-time tag team brawls. Players can tag out and have the second fighter enter performing a jump attack, a move useful for escaping tight situations. Additionally, the game features Wi-Fi League Battle Mode, allowing up to eight players to duke it out in round-robin mini tournaments. The PSP version also includes network games (Ad-Hoc only) for up to 8 players, with four additional modes: VS Mode, Team Mode, Variable Battle, and the Dramatic Battle with multiple fighters going at it simultaneously
