The Thing, a survival horror and third-person shooter video game for the Sony PlayStation 2, was released on August 20, 2002. Developed by Computer Artworks and co-published by Vivendi Universal Games under the Black Label Games label and Konami, the game is set as a sequel to John Carpenter’s 1982 film of the same name. Players take on the role of Captain Blake, a member of a United States Army Special Forces team sent to an Antarctic outpost to investigate the mysterious deaths of a research team. The game’s narrative unfolds as players navigate through 20 frightening levels, encountering a shape-shifting alien life form that can assume the appearances of the people it kills. This alien, known as “The Thing,” is a formidable adversary, being difficult to see, hard to kill, and seemingly impossible to evade.

The game’s atmosphere is enhanced by its advanced trust/fear interface, which adds a new layer of interaction. Players must manage their team’s psychological state, as their decisions influence whether team members will cooperate or turn against them. The game features a variety of enemies, ranging from scuttling head-spiders and human-like walkers to gigantic multi-tentacled beasts, each requiring different tactics to defeat. Players can use a range of weapons, including machine guns, explosives, and flamethrowers, to combat these threats.
