The Water Cube 01 140/147 is an Uncommon Trainer (Technical Machine) card from the Aquapolis expansion of the E-Card Series, released on January 15, 2003 by Wizards of the Coast and illustrated by "Big Mama" Tagawa, a Japanese artist whose playful, hand-drawn aesthetic and self-referential compositions gave several E-Card era Trainer cards a uniquely personal and whimsical quality. As one of the five "Cube 01" Technical Machine cards in the 147-card base checklist—alongside Fire Cube 01, Grass Cube 01, Lightning Cube 01, and Fighting Cube 01—it carries the Japanese name ウォーターキューブ01 and originates from the Japanese The Town on No Map expansion (082/092). The Aquapolis set was the second and largest main expansion of the E-Card Series, featuring 186 total cards (147 base + 32 H-numbered holographics + 3 Crystal secret rares + 4 alternates) and introducing the Crystal Pokémon mechanic, and this card includes the E-Card format's distinctive Dot Code strip along the bottom edge designed for scanning with the Pokémon-e Reader device.

In terms of decks and strategy, Water Cube 01's effect is a versatile targeted-damage tool: "Attach this card to 1 of your Water Pokémon in play. That Pokémon may use this card's attack instead of its own. At the end of your turn, discard Water Cube 01." Its sole attack, Splatter, costs a single Water Energy and deals 20 damage to any of the opponent's Pokémon—ignoring Weakness and Resistance entirely. This "ignore everything" damage clause made it a reliable chip-damage tool in 2003-era competitive formats, as it could apply consistent 20-damage pressure to high-HP attackers like Rayquaza, Groudon, and Kyogre regardless of their defensive stat blocks, and it could also be used to finish off a damaged Pokémon that would otherwise survive a normal attack due to Resistance. In E-Card tournament play, Water Cube 01 found utility in any deck built around Water-type Pokémon, where the ability to attach it to a cheap early-stage Pokémon like Marill or Wartortle without sacrificing a primary attacker created a flexible damage source. The one-turn duration and mandatory discard created a strategic timing element: players had to decide when to use the attack to maximize the damage window before the card was lost. The attack's origin as "Squirt" on Marill from the Southern Islands theme deck adds a layer of cross-set lineage that connects it to the broader E-Card era's design history.

Collectors love the Aquapolis Water Cube 01 for its unique position as one of the most mechanically creative Technical Machine cards in the entire E-Card era, a card whose "ignore Weakness and Resistance" damage clause represented a design philosophy of consistent, reliable chip damage that was remarkably effective for a single Water Energy cost. "Big Mama" Tagawa's illustration, with its energetic, hand-drawn composition and playful cube motif rendered in her signature loose, sketchbook-quality linework, gives the card a genuinely unique visual identity that stands out among the more conventional and polished artwork of the set's other Uncommon Trainers. The E-Card format's distinctive Dot Code strip and the discontinued Pokémon-e Reader technology give the card a genuinely unique physical structure that no other Pokémon TCG printing shares, and the digital layer it was designed for—animated card views, bonus Pokédex lore, and exclusive in-game content—has since been lost to time, making these cards the sole surviving artifacts of a short-lived but innovative digital platform. As an Uncommon from the largest Pokémon TCG set ever printed, it also exists in a Reverse Holofoil variant where the foil treatment is applied to the card's back rather than the artwork window, adding a second chase target for collectors who appreciate the subtle production differences within the E-Card era's premium printings.
